Wanaka, New Zealand
What started as a fencepost now stands as an icon of hope and a symbol of a nation. According to locals, the tree now known as That Wanaka Tree started off over 80 years ago as one of many fence posts lining the lake. The post was made from the wood of a Willow tree, a type of tree that often grows near but not usually in the water. This hardy fence post clearly had a certain zeal for life and managed to take root in the rocky shore of the lake. As years passed, the waters rose and yet the resilient little tree survived and is still slowly growing today, just off the shores of Lake Wanaka. Each fall, travelers and locals alike gather on the lake shore as the first light of morning illuminates the autumn leaves. This particular morning, a lone Shag remained on the lowermost branch just as the light struck the tree and water, then flew off moments after this exposure was made.
