Amboseli National Park, Kenya.

Kitambo Jaro roughly translates to “A Moment at Kilimanjaro” and this indeed was a rare and touching moment. In Amboseli National Park, it’s unusual to see a herd of elephants on the rich grassy plain so early. This is because they usually line up and march about 4 miles each evening into the forests at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. However, this herd had a tiny baby in tow, so they decided to skip the long commute and stay the night among the grasses. I was lucky enough that in this moment – or kitambo – nature worked with me just so. Mom munches while the baby lifts up his trunk to show off to an auntie; meanwhile, one of the juveniles is nuzzling for the attention of the matriarch – all while cattle egrets soar overhead and the sun kisses the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
