The Impression Series |The Headwaters Series™| Headwaters of the Pigeon River
As the name suggests, my Abstract Forests of the World Series™, features impressionistic exposures of Earth’s iconic forests. The abstract effect is created in-camera by opening the shutter and moving the camera vertically. The movement smoothly blends and preserves the colors of the forest while softly erasing the myriad of finite details – a process that accentuates the vertical nature of the trunks themselves. When done right, this technique allows the viewer to explore an impression of a forest – a glimpse that is both reality and illusion.
Captured in one of the highest elevation tributaries of the Pigeon River, the aptly named Yellowstone Prong is littered with beautiful yellow and golden stones. The strong afternoon light and deep shadows accentuate the golden appearance of the stones as the water ripples past. For this image I’ve used a shutter speed just fast enough to define the ripples of the water but slow enough to show a touch of its movement. This technique in combination with the shape of the rocks and limbs on the bottom of the stream bed present a similar look to using a pallet knife on canvas.
Combining my love for abstract forms and my boyhood passion for fishing with my father, I’ve adopted a mission of visiting and capturing the abstract beauty of the “Headwaters” of all the major rivers in Southern Appalachia. This is one of the flagship images of that Headwaters Series.
